Local Church drops “BOMB” on Community
OCEANSIDE, CA (September 17, 2009) - New Song Community Church of Oceanside is promoting awareness of Hunger Action Month by launching the "BOMB" program. BOMB, which stands for "Buy One More Blessing", was conceived by the Next-Door Team, led by Daniel Ramos.
"It is important to reach out to our community and get the hunger issue brought to the forefront," said Ramos, "now more than ever, it has to be a public priority."
There is increasing need in San Diego County. On August 26th, 2008 the Center on Policy Initiatives (CPI) published an Issue Brief entitled "Earnings, Poverty and Income in San Diego County." A number of key findings to this brief are:
There are 787,991 people or 27.4% of county residents that live in economic hardship.
45.1% of adults living in poverty work either full or part time.
There are 257,244 children living in economic hardship.
"We felt that in an area as blessed as San Diego County that a quarter of a million children possibly going hungry at night should just not happen." continued Ramos, "The BOMB program is a simple but effective way for anyone to help. Just remember the next time you go to the store to "Buy One More...bottle, bag, box, basket, barrel, bunch...you get the point. Just buy one more for your neighbor."
Imagine a community where no one goes hungry at night. If everyone gives just a little, we could feed a lot. September is the time when local food banks begin to stockpile resources to feed the needy through the winter. As we all know, the economy has affected most Americans and many local families are struggling with hunger every day including families who've never experienced hunger before. Please join with us so we can ensure that no one goes hungry in our neighborhoods.
